It got to the point where I would come home everyday and literally cry on the couch at the thought of ever returning to work again.

And All Felt Hopeless, Until One Day I Had A Special Conversation That Just So Happened To Change My Life Forever…

I remember it like it was yesterday - it was a cloudy day in September of 2017, and I had just made my way into the venue in which our company was hosting an event…

By now in my career, I was managing influencer marketing campaigns - basically where companies sponsor an influencer to share products with their network or audience.

Our company was the one hiring the creators for these campaigns, and we were hosting a panel discussion with some of our selected influencers later that day - one of whom was an upcoming fitness influencer named Chinae Alexander.

Chinae didn’t have a huge following, but she made beautiful fitness content and was really passionate about spreading her message.

After the event, I got to chatting with her, and that’s when I heard…

“...for a total amount of $10,000.”

We were making polite conversation about how she was monetizing her brand, and she casually mentioned that she was getting paid $10,000 to make 3 Instagram posts with company products featured in them.

It would probably take her 10 minutes to take the pictures… and another 20 to write the captions… and she would make $10,000… by simply monetizing content she had a genuine interest in.

As the conversation wrapped up, I made the mistake of asking what she had planned for the rest of the day…

“Oh, I’ll probably just record some gym videos and go have lunch with a girlfriend.”

This Was The Moment My Entire Worldview Was Shattered.

Chinae was going to get free products shipped to her… make $10,000 for 3 Instagram posts… and spend the rest of the day making content for which she had a genuine passion.

Meanwhile, I was looking at my calendar realizing I’d be at the office, babysitting clients for the next 7 hours…

Wondering where I went wrong.

I had followed the rules and done everything by the book - got a good job, climbed the ranks, and worked hard…

And Ended Up Working Myself Into A Pair Of Golden Handcuffs, And I Hated It.

I hated it because I knew that ultimately I was only making other people richer… while sacrificing the things that really mattered to me in the process.

I had goals, dreams, and a family… and my current situation wasn’t getting me any closer to them.

Nothing felt the same after this meeting with Chinae - it felt like someone put a wedge in the middle of my brain.

“Why should I work 10 hours a day when Chinae works 2 and makes the same money as me?”

After a few days of my head spinning, thinking about this meeting with Chinae, my husband noticed and confronted me.

“What’s going on?” he said to me one day after work “...is there something on your mind?”… and I reluctantly told him about my meeting with Chinae and how I had the idea of doing the same thing.

I’m not going to lie - I was expecting him to dismiss the idea of me pursuing my passion as a health & wellness influencer as a crazy pipedream, but I was wrong.

He heard me, and he saw what I saw.

We sat down, and we had a serious conversation. We discussed what it would take for me to go full time on my passion of being a health & wellness content creator - We took into account our expenses, liabilities, and our soon-to-be family of 4, and we came up with a number:

$15,000 USD.

That’s how much I would need to make from brand deal sponsorships per month, 3 months in a row for it to be “safe” for me to leave my corporate job and go all in on content creation.

At my corporate job, I made around $130,000 a year, so I earned about $10,000 a month (though I saw much less of it due to taxes)

If I was going to quit my job, I'd have to make that full amount, plus what our insurance would cost... which in NYC was $3,000 per month for my whole family (NY health insurance is a fortune!)

…So that was $13,000 a month I'd need to earn... and we rounded it up to an even $15,000 assuming there would be a few other things I'd need to take on since I'd no longer have an expense account.

Once we landed on that, it was settled: I would have to prove that I could earn $15k per month for 3 months in a row as an influencer. Once I did that, I could give notice.

And while it would sound really nice in retrospect…

I’d be lying if I said I lept into action right after this.

At the time, I was 6 months pregnant and had spent 17 long years in my industry - starting a new career at this point was a crazy big risk for me. To be 100% honest, I was absolutely terrified at the thought of not having a safe source of income when my 2nd son was born.

As the hours, days, and weeks passed, I had this voice nagging in my head. I hated this existence, and yet… I was paralyzed by fear from my other option.

But That Changed For Good One Wednesday Morning.

I was sitting in O'hare airport... for probably the sixth time in two months. I was traveling for work and meeting clients in Chicago. Then I heard it over the loudspeaker:

"Flight #1167, originally scheduled to take off at 5:06pm has been delayed to 9:47pm, with an expected arrival at New York's Laguardia airport at 12:03am."

My flight was delayed... AGAIN.

I was going to miss seeing my son Mason... AGAIN.

I was pregnant with my second son, and had "morning sickness" which should really be called "all day sickness." I felt awful.

I sat down in my seat in the boarding area and thought... I'm doing all of this to support someone else's business.

Someone else's bank account.

Someone else's dreams.

I decided then and there: I HAVE to make a change.

I Decided In That Moment That I Would Rather Go For It And Fail Than Accept Another Day of This Existence.

I took what felt like a massive risk at the time. I went all in on my fitness page, NYCFitFam, and started making content about health & wellness, while still working at my corporate job.
